Late April is one of the quieter windows in the Pioneer Valley: too early for peak greenery, too late for good skiing, and still solidly in the mud-season period on most hilltown trails. It’s also one of the nicest times to be outside if you pick the right spots.
Auto roads and ridge overlooks
The auto road up to the Summit House on Mount Holyoke typically opens by mid-May; the Summit House itself is staffed on weekends and holidays from late May - so not yet. The hike up from the lower Mountain Road lot via the Halfway House Trail, on the other hand, is open year-round and is in good shape by late April once the snow melts.
The Mount Sugarloaf auto road typically opens around mid-May, weather permitting. Poet’s Seat Tower in Greenfield is open by now; the gate comes off Mountain Road as soon as the road is clear.
Rail trails
The Norwottuck Rail Trail and the Manhan Rail Trail are at their best right now: dry, crowd-free, and cool. Both are fully open.
Mud-season caution
Some trails aren’t ready yet. Rattlesnake Gutter in Leverett, the north ridge of Mount Tom, and parts of Fitzgerald Lake are often soft enough in late April that hiking damages the treadway. Give them another week or two.
A good weekend
If you want a full April Saturday, the Mohawk Trail foliage drive itinerary works in reverse-season too: trees are bare, rivers are high, the Bridge of Flowers may still be in its spring maintenance window, and Shelburne Falls is quiet enough for an easy walk between the potholes, Iron Bridge, and Bridge Street storefronts. Worth the drive.
