A view east along Northampton's Main Street on a bright November afternoon — the wide one-way street running across the frame with parked cars along both curbs, a continuous row of two- and three-story 19th-century brick and clapboard storefronts with painted-sign cornices on either side, mature street trees in late-fall foliage along the sidewalks, the Calvin Theatre marquee visible part-way down the block on the right, the white spire of the First Church rising above the rooflines in the distance, and a high blue sky overhead.

Northampton Brewery opened in 1987 in a converted carriage house off Brewster Court, making it one of the oldest operating brewpubs in New England. The house beer list rotates around a few year-round staples (an IPA, a pale ale, a seasonal lager) and a short list of pub food: burgers, pizzas, fish and chips, salads.

The restaurant’s best-known feature is its rooftop deck, an open-air upper level that fills up quickly on summer evenings. There is also an enclosed dining room downstairs and a separate bar area.

Visiting

The brewery serves lunch and dinner daily. Reservations aren’t accepted on the deck. It’s first come, first served. The nearest parking is the Armory Street garage a block away.
