Bombyx Center for Arts and Equity is a non-profit performance and community space at 130 Pine Street in the village of Florence, part of Northampton. The center occupies a historic 19th-century church that is also home to the still-active Florence Congregational Church congregation; Bombyx programs concerts, talks, and community events in the sanctuary.

The building and the name

The site has been a gathering place since the 1860s, when Florence’s abolitionist-leaning founders organized a congregation that admitted women as full voting members from the start. The neighborhood itself grew up around 19th-century silk manufacturing (the Nonotuck Silk Company and related businesses), and the venue’s name nods to that history. Bombyx refers to Bombyx mori, the silk moth whose domestication made silk possible; according to the center, raising silk locally was framed in its day as a deliberate alternative to cotton produced by enslaved labor in the South.

Programming

The booking leans toward jazz, acoustic roots, folk, and global music, alongside readings, dance, and community workshops. The sanctuary is an intimate, acoustically warm room, closer in feel to a listening room than a club, and it draws touring acts that suit a seated, attentive audience. For the Northampton context, it sits between the larger Calvin Theatre and the long-running Iron Horse Music Hall downtown.

Visiting

The current calendar and tickets are at bombyx.live. The venue is in central Florence, a short drive or bike ride from downtown Northampton along the Northampton Bikeway, with on-street parking in the surrounding neighborhood.
