The Academy of Music Theatre is an 800-seat Victorian opera house on Main Street in downtown Northampton. Built in 1891 by Edward H. R. Lyman and deeded to the city in 1892, it is one of the oldest municipally owned theaters still operating in the United States. The auditorium retains its original horseshoe balcony, proscenium arch, and gilt ornamentation.
The non-profit that operates the theater today programs a mix of second-run and independent films, live music, comedy, dance, and theatrical productions. The space has hosted touring Broadway shows since its opening year and continues to draw Northampton’s performing arts audiences.
