The Roundhouse at the Franklin County Fairgrounds in Greenfield on a partly cloudy late-summer afternoon: a large circular barn painted dark red with a low conical shingled roof topped by a small white cupola flying a US flag, a row of small white-trimmed square windows set just below the eaves, a smaller dark-red shed wing attached on the left side, a green-and-white striped awning in shade at far left with several people seated beneath it at picnic tables, a man in a white short-sleeved shirt and dark trousers walking along a flagstone path in the foreground, a paved drive curving across the front of the barn, mature deciduous trees flanking the building, and the corner of a pale-yellow outbuilding visible at the right edge.

The Franklin County Fair, run by the Franklin County Agricultural Society, has been held every year since 1848, making it one of the longest continuously running agricultural fairs in the United States. It takes place over four days in mid-September at the fairgrounds on Wisdom Way in Greenfield. The present fairgrounds date to the mid-1860s.

The fair retains an unusually strong agricultural focus: livestock competitions (dairy cattle, oxen draws, sheep, poultry), a horticultural hall, a woodsmen’s competition, and vegetable and baking judging fill most of the schedule. A smaller midway, a horse show, live music on the grandstand, and a demolition derby round out the program.

Visiting

In 2026, the fair runs Thursday, September 10 through Sunday, September 13. Adult admission is $15, with discounts for opening night, seniors, military, and youth; ages 8 and under are free. Fairgrounds parking is $10. The grounds are about a mile from downtown Greenfield.
