The Symphony Hall facade head-on from Court Street in Springfield on an overcast spring afternoon — a limestone-clad Classical-Revival front with six tall fluted columns rising to a deep dentilled pediment, three pairs of bronze-framed double-height windows set between the columns, a row of carved doorways at street level above a wide stone stair, ornate cast-iron lampposts flanking the entry, an empty sidewalk and curb in the foreground, a sliver of a modern glass tower at the right edge, and a soft pale-grey sky above.

Symphony Hall is a 2,611-seat Classical Revival concert hall at 34 Court Street in downtown Springfield, opened in 1913 as part of the city’s Municipal Group civic complex alongside City Hall and the Campanile. The auditorium is built on the traditional shoebox plan (like Boston’s Symphony Hall, which opened a decade earlier) and is still considered one of the best acoustic rooms in western New England.

The hall is the home venue of the Springfield Symphony Orchestra and hosts touring classical, jazz, and pop performances; comedy; and occasional Broadway tours through the season. The interior retains its gilt ceiling ornament, painted proscenium, and horseshoe balcony.

Visiting

Performance schedules and ticket prices vary; check the venue site for upcoming shows. The hall is city-owned and accessible from Court Square; the Court Square garage is across the street.
