The Magic Wings Butterfly Conservatory roadside sign on a clear November afternoon. A slate-blue panel reads 'Magic Wings Butterfly Conservatory & Gardens' in gold script with a painted black-and-white butterfly perched on the right, a yellow metal butterfly silhouette rests on a low stone wall in front amid green shrubs, bare-branched trees and a few rust-colored autumn leaves frame the left, and the sky overhead is deep cloudless blue.

Magic Wings is a privately owned butterfly conservatory on Route 116 in South Deerfield, opened in 2000. The main attraction is an 8,000-square-foot glass conservatory kept at tropical conditions (around 80°F and high humidity), with roughly 4,000 butterflies of several dozen species flying freely among flowering plants. Visitors are asked to check themselves for hitchhikers on the way out.

Outside the conservatory there is a small gift shop, a gallery of mounted specimens, a koi pond, and a garden planted for native New England butterflies and moths (open in warmer months). The site is fully accessible.

Visiting

Magic Wings is currently open Tuesday through Sunday, 10am–5pm. Admission is $20 adults, $15 seniors, veterans, and students with ID, $10 children ages 3–17, and free for children under 3; check the website for current rates before driving. Strollers are welcome in the conservatory.
